Washing machine: which detergent — liquid or powder?

Engineer's advice

Our recommendation is not to use liquid detergent. Here is why.

Liquid detergent tends to create a film that, over time, can lead to unpleasant mould.

Because of this, you should run an empty wash at high temperature at least every three months, using specialist cleaning products readily available in shops.

We advise against all "DIY" solutions — such as washing with white vinegar and bicarbonate — because over time these products corrode and damage rubber parts and hoses.

The result? Cracks or even breakdowns.

Our suggestion, therefore, is to use powder detergent. The wash is noticeably more effective.

It is simply a combination of Marseille soap paired with the well-known blue scent boosters for fragrance.

One final tip: to "soften" hard water, run an occasional wash with Calgon products, which help keep the heating element free from limescale.
